WHAT?

SELF SHIATSU® is a method of applying pressure along the meridian pathways to release energy and promote healing on all levels. This process is assisted by the use of gentle stretching, focused breathing and meditation. These stress management tools are easily learned and practiced for perpetual personal health and well-being

WHY?

The SELF SHIATSU® course was developed in order to give participants the ability to take healing into there own hands. This is done by developing a sense of self through various introspective exercises and practices as well as learning basic Zen Shiatsu techniques.

The focus of SELF SHIATSU® is personal healing, based on the principle that the only person who can heal you, is you. If you do not want to heal, it does not matter what you do, you will not get well. By taking health care into your own hands, you have made a conscious choice to get well and restore balance to your life. This is not limited to the physical body, but also includes the emotional and spiritual bodies. Together these three aspects of self create the whole person.

HOW?

SELF SHIATSU® is designed as an ongoing program of four-week workshops. Though each four-week unit is distinct, continued participation will yield greater personal insight and individual well-being. Classes will change and grow as they progress from month to month, and new material will be covered. There is no need to limit yourself to a single session — feel free to participate as often as you like.

OUTLINE

SELF SHIATSU® consists of diverse techniques which include Basic Meditation, Breath Work and Meridian Stretching, as well as various introspective exercises and fundamentals of Zen Shiatsu practice. Participants will learn how to manage the effects day-to-day stresses have on the body, as well as assist it in alleviating common complaints such as headaches, backache, muscle stiffness and so on. By practicing systematic relaxation, opening up and unblocking the energy pathways, we are better able to recharge the whole body, enabling it to regenerate and strengthen itself for optimal health.

TO BRING…

Participants are asked to bring a meditation cushion, or something suitable to sit on.

Wear comfortable clothes which are neither bulky nor confining, as freedom of movement is essential; you may wish to layer your clothing for warmth.
Though support materials will be provided, you may wish to bring notebook and pen for your personal use.

Healthy Boundaries and Preventing Burn-out is a class designed for practitioners who are involved with client work. Whether your methodology is hands-on body work, or various forms of talk therapy or energy work, understanding healthy boundaries is a vital tool to learn.

When we engage in a form of therapy with another individual we open ourself up to share and feel what is happening with the other person, consciously or unconsciously. Essentially, we are interacting on an energetic level with our client. This is the point at which we, as practitioners, can start to react to our clients, particularly if we are not conscious of the process.

When a practitioner starts to react to their clients they often put up unhealthy boundaries in order to try and protect themselves from what it is that they are feeling. This is the point at which one begins the process of burn-out. The harder you try to protect yourself from what you are feeling, the harder it becomes to protect yourself. This very struggle is burn-out. A person can only participate in this struggle for so long before they become weakened by it to such an extent that they can no longer do the job they were trained to do.

Learning how to deal with this situation involves looking at one's own beliefs, as well as addressing one's emotional self. This is, in itself, a process that will not only create a more fulfilling environment for you as a practitioner, but will also make treatments more beneficial for your clients. In other words, you will become a much stronger person for it and all areas of you life will benefit.

We will work with the following principles:

  • Understanding energetic patterns
  • Avoiding energetic transference
  • Building harmful boundaries
  • Methods of preventing burn-out
  • The nature of being triggered
  • Confronting your own issues
  • Developing personal clarity

This class will be a combination of practical and experiential work, as well as the development of an intellectual understanding of the process itself. It is important to understand the process, but it is more important to put this knowledge into practice. The program will take place over a series of two-hour sessions.
